A significant failure at Microsoft resulted in extensive disruptions affecting global airlines, apps, and even certain stock exchanges on Friday. In India, the nationwide outage of check-in systems for IndiGo, Akasa, and SpiceJet airlines began at 10:45 am.

Microsoft discovered a configuration change in a section of the Azure backend workloads as the initial reason for the issue. This disruption caused a disconnection between storage and compute resources, impacting Microsoft 365 services.

Users worldwide experienced the well-known Blue Screen of Death error messages. International airlines, banks, stock exchanges, and media organizations faced problems. Yet, Indian stock markets BSE and NSE did not experience any disruptions, with NSE indicating low dependence on Microsoft software. Indian Railways services remained unaffected.

Airlines are working together with Microsoft to promptly solve the problem. The Delhi-based Indira Gandhi International Airport experienced temporary disruptions but promised to work closely with all parties involved to reduce any inconvenience. Travelers should keep in contact with their airlines for any updates.

We are collaborating closely with all our stakeholders to reduce the inconvenience for our passengers. The airport advised passengers to contact the airline or ground help desk for the latest flight updates.

Bengaluru Airport had to switch to manual check-ins and provide handwritten boarding passes because the Navitaire Departure Control System stopped working during the global outage. A spokesperson from the airport has verified the impact of the outage starting at 10:40 IST on July 19, 2024.

Airline declarations

Akasa: "Because of infrastructure problems with our service provider, certain online services like booking, check-in, and managing bookings will be temporarily inaccessible. We deeply apologize for the inconvenience and want to reassure you that our teams are collaborating with our service provider to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

SpiceJet is experiencing a technical problem that is preventing us from giving updates on flight disruptions at the moment. Our team is currently engaged in finding a solution for this problem. We apologize for any trouble caused and will notify you when the problem is fixed. Thank you for being patient and working together.

The extensive Microsoft outage has led to major disruptions, especially in the airline sector. Steps are being taken to return to normal, and travelers are encouraged to consult their airline for the most up-to-date details.
