Meta says it reopened about 4.5 hours after thousands of users had technical issues accessing its services on Wednesday, according to the outage monitoring website Downdetector.com.

"We’re working on it — so keep up," Meta, the parent company of social media and instant messaging services, tweeted on X at 2.26am, saying, ‘thanks for being patient! And we’re 99 per cent there - a few last things to do. Our apologies to all who have been inconvenienced by the disruption".

Network downtimes and service disruptions reported by tens of thousands of social media and messaging app users in the UAE on Wednesday. On Downdetector during the peak of the outage which began around 12.50pm ET (9.50pm), over 2,600 with WhatsApp and over 2,000 with Instagram in the UAE were hit.

There were some people having issues sending and receiving messages on Whatsapp, and posts not loading on Facebook and Instagram.

A few Facebook and Instagram users inundated X with memes about the downtime. Users on the micro-blogging website said they were seeing a "something went wrong" error and that Meta was fixing it.

Meta said it is aware of a technical problem that affects users’ access to its apps. Facebook and Instagram issued a statement on X: "We’re trying to get back to normal as quickly as possible and sorry for the inconvenience.

On Wednesday at around 10.10pm more than 1,300 users have complained about Instagram and Facebook problems on Downdetector.ae.
