Dubai: According to a high ranking official, soon travelers won’t have to stop to show any documents throughout any of the Dubai airports.

As per Lieutenant Colonel Khaled bin Madia Al Falasi, who is the Deputy Assistant Director for Smart Services at the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA Dubai) the project entitled Travel Without Borders’ will employ an artificial intelligence camera to quickly scan the traveling person’s face, confirm biometric data on the move, identify the person, and register the entry or exit at the passport control area officially.

Dubai Airports has announced plans to integrate a ‘Borders Less Travel’ initiative that aims to do away with any passport checks or smart gates. The project combines the forces of Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency & Foreigners Affairs and aims at making the journey of the passengers through the airport systems as easy and quick as possible.

This transformation is all about enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the biometrics and ease of the facial recognition technology. No more smart gates or submitting passports will be a must for travelers as cameras will be installed across many points within the airports to do the identification. The program is expected to reduce the wait time significantly and increase the security while allowing many millions of passengers every year to move through smoothly.

Lt. Gen. Mohammed Al Marri, the Director General of GDRFA, emphasized that the initiative is an embodiment of the desire of Dubai to embrace new ideas and development of a smart city. “We are working nonstop, focusing on providing passengers with an unrivaled travel experience, and being at the forefront of new technology application,” he said.

The program ‘Travel Without Borders’ will be applied in stages so that the existing infrastructure of the airport is not disrupted during the changeover process. Such a strategy is consistent with UAE’s objectives of developing a smart city and making the country a focal point for tourism.

Once the initiative is operational, the airport is expected to raise the bar for all airports around the world, therefore further consolidating Dubai’s standing in the international travel era which also reimagines the future of airport management.
