LuLu Group International, a retail giant from Abu Dhabi, has implemented India's real-time payment system, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), in all of its stores in the UAE.

A. Amarnath, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy, marked the start of the celebrations for the 78th Indian Independence Day by making the first purchase at a LuLu Hypermarket in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

Indian nationals living abroad and tourists from India can now use their RuPay card to make payments at LuLu stores. They have the option to utilize their UPI-enabled applications such as Gpay, PhonePe, and Paytm to scan the UPI QR code for making payments.

Saifee Rupawala, CEO of LuLu Group International, stated that the newly introduced payment system will be advantageous for over 10 million Indian visitors to the UAE annually, enhancing convenience and promoting local commerce and economy.

UPI is a quick payment system that merges various bank accounts into one mobile app from any involved bank. It combines diverse banking functionalities, allowing smooth transactions, payments to merchants, and additional services, all on one platform.

In Abu Dhabi, President Sheikh Mohamed and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi collaboratively launched the UPI RuPay card service in February. After that, Mashreq Bank, based in Dubai, and Al Maya Supermarkets have also implemented UPI payment options.

Festival in India lasting a week

To celebrate Independence Day, LuLu Group inaugurated its yearly 'India Utsav' festival in all of its UAE stores. The event lasting one week showcases Indian products at discounted prices, features traditional performances, and includes appearances by celebrities.

Amarnath highlighted at the festival opening that the event demonstrates the robust bilateral ties and reflects the growing popularity of Indian goods in the emirates.

The event welcomes everyone to explore distinct and genuine Indian items, enjoy delicious Indian dishes, and discover a variety of Indian ethnic fashions.

The event provides discounts on a range of Indian goods such as rice, traditional breakfast mixes, cereals, spices, meats, premade snacks, and groceries.
