'Heavy ion therapy': Abu Dhabi to open game-changing cancer treatment facility

Abu Dhabi has set out to establish a state-of-the-art ‘heavy ion therapy’ facility in the UAE, bringing the latest innovations in cancer treatment to the region. The centre will reside near Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Fatima Bint Mubarak Centre and will be one of the world’s 15 ion therapy facilities.
The Health Centre was announced on the first day of Abu Dhabi Health Week, which commenced on Tuesday.
Heavy ion therapy is one of the latest innovations in radiation treatment and utilizes carbon ions to laser-focus radiation to cancerous tissues. Carbon ions, having 12 times the weight of protons, can decimate cancerous tissues with far more energy. The therapy does not only destroy more cancer cells, but also spares normal tissues around the carcinoma due to its accuracy and precision. It is achieved by following a complex stepwise treatment approach tailored to maximize precision and efficacy.
The use and application of carbon ions in Heavy Ion Therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy. The therapy precisely targets tumors using carbon ions. Unlike protons, carbon ions are multiplied by 12 in weight which means that they are far more powerful in terms of destroying energy delivered to cancer cells. The therapy not only destroys cancer more effectively, but harms the normal tissues surrounding the cancer even less because of its precision. The treatment is highly sophisticated and has careful procedures designed for maximal precision and effectiveness.
