Dubai asks residents to avoid single-use plastic containers, tableware during iftar

Dubai: The Dubai Municipality called for residents to stop using single-use plastic containers and tableware during iftar as part of their campaign for sustainability during the holy month.
The municipal authority called on residents to incorporate modest yet effective sustainable practices into their Ramadan daily schedules to enhance environmental awareness.
The civic body used social media to express that Ramadan offers the best time for self-reflection regarding our decisions and shared ideas for small sustainable changes that create significant impacts.
The municipality encourages residents to embrace sustainability during Ramadan by refraining from using single-use plastic containers and tableware at iftar meals.
The municipality has advised residents to lessen their dependency on single-use plastic containers for large iftar gatherings while also recommending the use of reusable tableware during these events.
The selection of reusable items by city residents helps to decrease plastic waste levels in the city. Dubai begins its transition away from single-use plastic products through this eco-friendly directive.
Dubai Municipality which manages the elimination of single-use products prohibited all single-use bags starting June 1, 2024 following their ban on single-use plastic bags on January 1, 2024.
Starting January 1, 2025, the authority will prohibit plastic stirrers, Styrofoam cups and food containers, plastic table covers, plastic cotton swabs and plastic straws followed by a ban on single-use plastic cups and lids, single-use plastic cutlery, plastic food containers and plastic plates effective January 1, 2026.
Cut food waste
The municipality emphasized minimizing food waste as a major concern during Ramadan when families gather for iftar and suhoor meals.
The municipality advises residents to prepare their meals with care while buying suitable amounts of food and storing it correctly to minimize waste. The municipality called on residents to reuse their edible food remains.
The civic body partners with food industry stakeholders and the UAE Food Bank to distribute excess food through registered charities so it reaches those in need during Ramadan.
The Municipality emphasized the need to keep the city clean and sustainable throughout Ramadan. The environment benefits greatly from good hygiene practices alongside recycling efforts and the use of eco-friendly materials.
