The goal of the project, which aims to enhance the country's ability to manage water and reduce the impact of floods, will be accomplished in 19 months of activity.

As part of the construction package announced on Friday, more than a dozen dams and water canals are to be built in the UAE.

The mega plan portrays a focus on the ‘Initiatives of the UAE President’ and aims at increasing rainwater harvesting and opens the country’s water storage capabilities of up to 8000000 cubic metres. The objective is to alleviate flooding and lessen the effects that strong rainfall might have on some homes.

As per a news agency report in WAM, other infrastructures will include Nine dams and nine water canals which will cover 9km in length and will be constructed in several regions of the nation. Additional plans include the renovation of two current dams and a series of rubble barriers.

This activity will be undertaken over a period of 19 months, covering 13 areas as follows:

  • The Shis area in Sharjah and the city of Khorfakkan

  • The Masfout area in Ajman

  • The Shaam and Al Fahalin districts in Ras Al Khaimah

  • The cities of Mohammed Bin Zayed, Al Hail, Al Qaryah, Qidfa, Marbah, Dhadna, Al Seiji and Al Ghazimri in Fujairah

April of this year marked a turning point for the United Arab Emirates. The nation recorded the highest rainfall in almost 75 years which resulted in the suspension of several flights, submerged vehicles and flooded entire neighborhoods and major roads across the country.

Barely weeks after the remarkable rainfall, President Sheikh Mohamed gave a directive to commence a robust assessment of the country’s infrastructure while reiterating the fact that the security of citizens is the number one concern of the UAE leadership.

Through the new building project that is to be implemented as one of the initiatives in the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, the nation hopes to strengthen its water resources and infrastructural development in response to climate change challenges.
