Dubai is going to open a new ultra-exclusive school which promises one of the world’s most innovative and costly schools by August 2025.

GEMS Education, Dubai Sports City — GEMS School of Research and Innovation has been launched in Dubai Sports City. The campus is designed for top-of-the-line facilities and custom instruction.

The school will be based on the English National Curriculum and have small classes for individual attention. We will limit class sizes in the early years to 16 students, and up to Year 6 we will limit class sizes to 20 students.

Maryssa O’Connor, principal/CEO of GEMS Wellington International School, and senior vice president of Education at GEMS Education, said the school spires to redefine premium education and make Dubai an institution for world-class learning.

"It’s K-12 where we’re going to introduce Year 6 in year one, and then we’re going to go through to early secondary school in year two (of operation)," O’Connor said. From Dh116,000 to Dh206,000 for the year, the school is an upper tier product in the Dubai education industry.

"We looked at the most expensive schools in the world and they have some of our things but they don’t have all of them. Our focus is comprehensive.  "Any parent who has invested in their kid’s education wants to know they’re getting the most for each Dirham that they spend, and our team will give them no less," she said.

State-of-the-art facilities

GEMS School of Research and Innovation Campus 47,600sqm built at $100 million (Dh367 million) over earlier premium school projects with 30 per cent more. Most notable is a high football pitch, also used as a helipad.

‘The school is GEMS Education’s most ambitious project to date, and it will combine the best of the best with innovation.

The school will have a comprehensive sports, arts and academic programme, coupled with modern facilities. They will play 15+ core sports, from swimming in an Olympic pool, to NBA-Spec basketball court with a 200-seat arena, to gymnastics in a separate space, to football, rugby, cricket, paddle courts, street hockey, martial arts in a dedicated dojo, and fencing taught by expert coaches.

"Tech will monitor and optimize, and Saturday activities become more outdoor and special such as water sports, mountain adventures, Ski Dubai, and ice skating". O'Connor said.

"We have a 600-seat theatre, 200-seat black box theatre, two drama rehearsal rooms, and top-of-the-line music rooms such as an orchestra and ensemble recording suite for the arts programme. "Dance programmes – from ballroom to street dance – are for all age groups, encouraging the creativity and movement," she continued.

There will also be a Disruption Lab and Research Centre at the school to develop entrepreneurial capability and creative thinking to inspire students to solve problems of the real world.

The school will also connect students to institutions globally, such as through UNESCO conferences and the GEMS for Life programme that connects students with top universities and companies. A collaboration with industry leaders will deliver praxis-based learning and equip students for a rapidly changing world.

Baz Nijjar, vice president of Education Technology and Digital Innovation, provided an explanation of the school’s tech partnerships: "We specifically have tech partnerships to assist in and enhance learning. Most times Apple, Microsoft or HP will come in to schools and talk about their programmes and the things they can do with their tools. We're taking the reverse approach."

‘They ask companies, rather than just use existing tools, how can they help them get the best results for their students,’ he continued. This means that we are in the position of integrating technology as well as learning into the curriculum seamlessly.

Providing premium, all-in-one education solutions

O’Connor continued that the school was built to address the increasing need for top-of-the-line, one-stop education options. "We know it’s the highest market place, and yes we do think it makes sense for now that they want to buy top spots and parents want this." said Alvarez. They just want it all in one place.

They want to raise the bar of what education can provide. And we know that it will do that for our parents," he says.

The school is designed to be a world leader in learning research, where expert teachers, highly selected for teaching robotics, artificial intelligence, the latest technology and a values-based education are taught.

The school prefers teachers from the UK but is also looking for international models. ‘All the teachers were carefully selected,’ the administration said.

‘We will teach according to the UK national curriculum. We’re mixing challenging learning, research and technology with top-performing teachers in incredible spaces and we think as teachers that’s where kids get to the limit of what they can do," O’conner said.

"We want our teachers to be experts in that...to be able to give it as a base. So the UK can be first of all, to get a good UK skill, and I think we have gone even further than that. We’re talking really, really good independent schools and amazing service. Those are where we want to target in recruitment," she said.

The school group’s headteachers insisted that every aspect of the school had been designed to give students a better sense of experience.

‘Core to our school’s vision,’ they noted, are its values: to build students who are imaginative, sensitive and ready to respond to the world, they said.

Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of GEMS Education, says, "GEMS School of Research and Innovation (SRI) is the result of all the lessons learned over the past four years at GEMS Education. It’s an ambitious education revolution that reshapes how students learn, think and lead – and sets new world records in the process. Simply put, it is one of the best schools in the world."

Already the new school has been backed by a long list of luminaries in British education, including Amanda Spielman, His Majesty’s Inspector for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (OFSTED) from 2017-2023.
