Level crossings As the busy Al Guria Road short-cuts into the Business Bay, certain new Salik – the ninth toll gate - is sited on Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail Road.
Commencement of operations
It’s also not true to say that beyond civil works, as Al Haddad earlier said: “Everything is on track, and we are not expecting any delays,” (construction of new booths in a Union Square).
"This is very well known by the, Salik PJSC and Dubai Roads and transport authority, and it will provide an announcement to the relevant stakeholders once operations are about to begin," He said and added “We are also very pleased to highlight that both new toll gates will be almost 100 percent solar powered, which is a first for Salik and something that we have been focused on achieving for some time.”
Salik here also explained: “Similar to Al mamzar north and south toll gates the same arrangement will also be applied in the coming al safa south gate where it will be interconnected to the existing al safa north gate – Meaning, If a motorist passes through these two gates in any given hour and any direction only one charge would be made.”
Whenever a vehicle using the salik toll system crosses into a salik toll gate, the vehicle is RFID detected and the Salik sticker inscribed on the vehicle or placed in the vehicle is scanned. A tall of Dh4 is instantly on tread removed from the motorists prepaid toll account.
Where are they located?
After traveling down the Dubai Water Canal bridge and heading towards the Sheikh Zayed Road in the Abu Dhabi direction, the Al Safa South gate can be seen just ahead of MedCare Orthopedics and Spine Hospital. A toll gate is present on this other side of the road going in the Sharjah direction which sits between the United Arab Bank and Pupil of Fate Motors just before the right turn towards Al Meydan Street or before the left ramp towards Al Hadiqa Rd to Jumeirah.
Impact of new toll gates
In the same way, Al Haddad was earlier stating that traffic movement especially on the Financial Centre Road and Meydan Street is likely to improve. It will also reduce the right-turn traffic volume from Sheikh Zayed Road to Meydan Street by 15 percent; and relief traffic instead use the bigger First Al Khail Street and Al Asayel Street.
Constant reinstated that there is a physical gate for Al Safa South which is connected with the northern Al Safa one that already exists. “This means there is simply one fee for people who pass the northern and the southern gate within the hour.
Moreover, he added regarding the upcoming Business Bay Crossing gate, “it is predicted that traffic congestion will decrease on Al Khail Road by 12 to 15 percent of the existing levels while traffic volume on Al Rabat Street will decrease by 10 to 16 percent.”
Will Salik fees increase?
In this case, specific margins that say how much adjustment may be made to the tariffs Al Haddad said ‘are the domain of the RTA and are subject to the approval of the Executive Council of Dubai.’
He also emphasized, ‘besides some few new toll gates opening in November, there is no schedule for new toll gates’, further explaining “the establishment of a new toll gate depends on traffic and congestion levels and the results of technical and traffic studies and therefore is not fixed.”
“The objective is to optimize the movement of people and light vehicles within the city of Dubai and the whole metropolitan area. The possibilities for expanding tolling systems – adding further gates, increasing the number of tolls, or incorporating market based design – build out further on the dialogue results of the strategic transport assessments carried out and brings new insights by the RTA. Therefore, it would be necessary to obtain approval from the Executive Council of Dubai on other changes of toll rates,” he elaborated.
There are presently eight active Salik electronic toll collection (ETC) gates throughout Dubai. Al Mamzar North, Al Mamzar South, Al Garhoud Bridge, Al Maktoum Bridge, Airport Tunnel, Al Safa, Al Barsha and Jebel Ali are these.
