DEWA Improves Efficiency by Adding 8 New 132 kV Transmission Substations
In early 2024, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) launched eight new 132 kV substations with a conversion capacity of 1,200 MVA, costing AED 1.36 billion. The 132 kV network's efficiency was improved by adding 89 kilometers of ground cable to meet the increasing electricity demand in Dubai.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, mentioned that a number of these substations cater to residential areas for Emirati citizens as part of the housing plan guided by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Introduced by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, the initiative seeks to improve the standard of living and social welfare in Emirati residential areas.

The new substations were commissioned in several areas including Al Thanya 3, Al Barsha South 4, Wadi Al Shabak, Nadd Hessa, International City Phase 2, Wadi Al Safa 5, and Umm Suqeim 3. These projects represent a significant milestone in DEWA’s (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) ongoing commitment to enhancing infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for electricity across the city.
The construction and completion of these substations required over 8 million safe working hours, emphasizing DEWA's dedication to safety and efficiency. Utilizing the latest global digital technologies, these substations are equipped to provide reliable and sustainable power supply. This initiative is part of DEWA’s broader digital transformation efforts, ensuring the integration of cutting-edge technology in its operations to enhance performance and reliability.
The commissioning of these substations will support the expanding residential, commercial, and industrial areas, promoting sustainable development and economic growth in Dubai. In addition, DEWA has granted contracts for ten 132 kV substations in different locations throughout Dubai, totaling AED 1 billion in cost. The mentioned locations are Al Aweer 1, Umm Nahad 4, Al Manara, Umm Suqeim 2, Al Quoz Industrial 3, Hatta, Al Barsha South 3, Al Barsha 2, Wadi Al Safa 4, and Zabeel 2. DEWA has additionally granted projects to lengthen 132 kV underground cables for linking these new substations to the primary grid, spanning a total of 25 kilometers and costing up to AED 176 million.
